Rejected by the Bank? Why Licensed Moneylenders Are a Smarter Solution for Urgent Cash Needs

8 October 2025 | Monetium Credit

If an emergency is on its way towards you, the first thing that you might want to do is run to the bank. You apply for the amount of money that you need to fix your problem, and you are rejected. Banks, while they are the most trusted moneylenders, are also the most complicated to borrow from. You need to have a perfect credit score, and fulfill lots of other requirements in order to be eligible to borrow from a bank. Well, that’s not the case for most people. Thankfully, licensed moneylenders exist, and can help you with your urgent cash loan problem.

Reasons Why the Bank May Reject You

Knowing the reasons why banks typically reject people can save you a lot of time. If you know that any of the following things apply to you, you might want to avoid applying to a bank. You will only lose time and hope. Let’s take a look at the most common reasons why banks might reject your application:

  • Low or no credit score – If you have no credit score, or have a low credit score, don’t even think of going to a bank. In Singapore, a good credit score is typically above 1900. So, if your credit score doesn’t look like that, applying for a loan with a bank will lead to a rejected loan application.
  • Insufficient documentation or income – You will be surprised to see how many documents you need to borrow from the bank. You need a big income, and an even bigger stack of documents. Most people simply cannot provide all of the income proof that the bank demands. The documentation is especially hard to provide if you are working as a freelancer, if you are self-employed, or a gig worker.
  • High DTI ratio – DTI stands for Debt-to-income, and if this ratio is high, you will be rejected. This ratio compares your monthly debt payments against your monthly income. It’s expressed as a percentage, and it’s ideal that it’s as low as possible. Look at an equation example, to better understand the issue: DTI = (1,000 : 5,000) x 100 = 20%. The 1,000 sum is the debt and the 5,000 is the income. The calculation shows us that 20% of your income is going towards paying debt. Most moneylenders will accept a debt ratio that doesn’t surpass 50%.

Why Not Choose the Bank?

Banks require lots of paperwork, which naturally takes a lot of time. An urgent cash loan application could even take a few weeks to be processed. And, after all of those weeks, you might be rejected. Moreover, if you urgently need cash, you are probably not willing to wait a few weeks for it. When you have an emergency, especially a health one, you need that money fast. The impossible eligibility criteria might not allow you to apply at all. Banks are a good idea only if you have a perfect credit score, and all the documents and time in the world available. If it’s a life-or-death emergency, banks are not the best option.

The Rise of Licensed Moneylenders

You might not want to collaborate with the bank, but you don’t know a lot about the other option. Well, the concept of a licensed moneylender has been getting more and more popular. A common misconception about certified moneylenders is that they are scammers. But that’s far from true. Certified moneylenders, unlike scammers or illegal loan sharks, are regulated by the Singaporean government. There is nothing to be afraid of, because everything is perfectly legal. As a tip, to ensure that you are actually working with a licensed lender, you should check the list that the Ministry of Law in Singapore has put together.

The Difference between a Bank and a Moneylender

The main difference between the two is the eligibility requirements. Licensed lenders don’t have such strict requirements, which means that you will most likely qualify. Even if you have no credit score, or a lower one, we can still find a solution for you. If you are interested in getting an urgent cash loan from a licensed moneylender, you can contact us! Monetium Credit is one of the most reputable lenders in Singapore. Our eligibility requirements are:

  • Be above the age of 21
  • Full-time or part-time employment status

You need to provide proof of identity, of residency, of employment and of income. There is a large chance that you will receive your answer on the same day. Which is essential when talking about urgent cash needs. The speed of approval is the second difference between a bank and a moneylender. A bank might take weeks to approve or reject your application, while a licensed money lender will take a few hours or a few days maximum.

Interest Rates and Fees

As you would expect, both options have advantages and disadvantages. So, while it’s true that banks usually have lower interest rates, the fact that you cannot even apply makes it useless. Moreover, interest rates with moneylenders are regulated by the government, so they cannot be higher than 4% per month. Most bank loans require collateral, even if it’s not a large amount that you are borrowing. Many people don’t have anything that they can put down as collateral, which makes it a big inconvenience. Moneylenders are often more permissive when it comes to these things. And, especially with an urgent cash loan, you don’t need any collateral.

Something that you need to know is that banks will often have hidden charges. They don’t have to disclose every simple fee that you will have to pay, so they don’t! But, moneylenders are obligated by the law to be fully transparent. At Monetium Credit, we are always 100% transparent with our clients. You won’t have any surprises on the way. All of the information regarding your loan will be known to you from the beginning. With banks, you might need to pay a processing fee that you weren’t aware of. Or a late payment fee that’s higher than you expected.

Misconceptions about Moneylenders

There are many misconceptions about moneylenders, and some of them were superficially mentioned somewhere in the beginning. A lot of people think of scammers and loan sharks when they think of moneylenders. It is good to be suspicious, but these kinds of ideas are simply not true. Scammers and loan sharks are indeed very dangerous, and you should never borrow from them. But, licensed lenders are doing everything legally. The government acknowledges their existence, and it regulates the way they operate. Borrowing from a licensed lender does not put you at risk. The law is on your side, and you are protected. If your lender is harassing you in any you, go to the police!

Another misconception is that borrowing from certified lenders is something you do if you are desperate. And, truth be told, you are as desperate as if you were borrowing from a bank! Rich people, or people who want a loan to buy something new – which is not an emergency – still borrow from moneylenders. As an example, we have a large variety of available loans. Some of the loans that we offer are:

  • Personal loan
  • Mortgage loan
  • Car loan
  • Business loan
  • Debt consolidation loan
  • Lifestyle loan
  • Instant loan

How to Avoid Scammers?

This article told you some of the reasons why licensed moneylenders are a smarter option, compared to banks, when it comes to borrowing an urgent cash loan. For it to be a smart choice, you need to actually find a licensed moneylender. But, how to ensure that? The first thing that you want to do is to check the list that we talked about before. Search the name of the lender on that list, and if they aren’t on there, you shouldn’t work with them. Some other tricks that might help you spot an illegal lender are their website and their messaging habits. If their website looks unprofessional, that is a red flag! A reputable and legal lender will have their contact information and their address on their website. If those are missing, you shouldn’t work with them.

Moreover, if you are contacted by a supposed lender, being proposes different offers, don’t reply. A licensed lender will never contact you with offers that you didn’t ask for. Especially not on social media or apps like WhatsApp. Another thing to pay attention to is upfront fees. You shouldn’t be asked to pay any kind of fees before your loan is approved. If you are asked for ‘insurance money’, it’s a scam! And, last but not least, not having a physical office is a big no-no. Any lender working legally is required to work from a registered address. If your supposed lender doesn’t want to meet in person, or avoids talking about meeting, they want to scam you.
