Loan Tenure Explained: How to Pick the Right Duration for Your Financial Goals in Singapore

5 September 2025 | Monetium Credit

If you are reading this post, chances are you are currently dealing with an unfavorable economic situation, and you need a cash infusion that can help you achieve your goals, improve your financial stability and make you less worried about your family’s monetary growth perspectives. We’ve all been there. Life in Singapore can be expensive, and the vast majority of us are just one unfortunate event away from facing economic default and becoming unable to afford our daily necessities. Fortunately, however, there are solutions.

Do you simply need quick cash with no questions asked that you are planning to repay by the end of the month? In such a case, going for payday loan with an ultra-short loan tenure could be an option to consider. However, if you have long-term goals, and you are planning a more extensive investment into your passions, property, or your children’s education, a personal, secured or unsecured loan will most likely be a better choice. Personal loans are the go-to solution for the vast majority of Singaporeans in need of fast cash infusions with beneficial repayment terms. But what kind of tenure should you be looking for?

Well, at least in the case of our agency, the vast majority of personal loans come with a repayment period between one and two years. (one year being the most common). Can there be exceptions? Yes, but it will depend on specific details like your current employment status, yearly wage, and the collaterals you are willing to present. A loan tenure spanning more than a year might be beneficial if you have long-term goals and you are not worried about your income stability. That said, what works for you might not necessarily be suitable for another borrower.

What Is a Typical Loan Tenure in Singapore?

It really depends on whether you are looking for the services of conventional banks, or the offers of a licensed moneylending agency, like us. Conventional banks typically offer financial aid packages with a tenure that can span a couple of years. That said, the eligibility criteria for their credits are usually a bit stricter, and the minimum annual wage for obtaining such loans is usually above $30,000. Private moneylenders, on the other hand, often deal with personal or payday loans characterized by shorter tenures, such as with a maximum repayment duration of two years.

There are exceptions yes, but the most common tenure duration for the personal loans provided by private lenders is around one year. Why only one year? Well, it depends on a lot of factors, but typically, the services of licensed lenders are usually utilized for smaller-sum cash infusions, that can be realistically reimbursed in a maximum of a couple of months. The interest rates for these short-term loans can be slightly higher, but nevertheless, as per the regulations laid front by the Moneylenders Act of 2008, they cannot go over 4% per month.

Plus, private lenders like us, typically have a more extensive credit catalog than conventional banking institutions, and the process for applying to our loans is more straightforward, as your application can be uploaded via our digital platform. The loan tenure will be influenced by the amount you want to borrow, your current credit score and even the type of credit you are applying to. Nevertheless, at least in our country, going for the services of private lenders, even if they are not offering 5+ years tenures, is typically a more favorable idea.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Long-Term Loans?

Let’s start with the benefits. In our country, a longer tenure for the credit package you contract will automatically translate into lower monthly payments, as the total sum you need to reimburse is stretched out. Let’s say, for example, that you borrow $40,000 at a 1.5% per month interest rate, no administration fee, and a reimbursement period of three years. For this period, your total interest, for the $40,000 you borrowed will come at slightly over $11,000 and your monthly payment will stand at close to $1,400.

But now let’s assume you want to borrow the same amount, but the repayment period is capped at one year, and therefore the interest rate of the loan is set at 3%, with no administration fee. In such a scenario, your total interest for the $40,000 you borrowed will stand at $4,000, while your monthly payment will be slightly above $3,600. You will pay less interest, but your monthly payment will be almost triple, which can be difficult to manage if you are not 100% sure about your income stability.

Singapore is a rich country in which the median wage for the average worker has surpassed the value of $6,000 per month. That said, things here are expensive, and the vast majority of us can’t save up enough cash to help for periods without a stable income source. The last thing you need is to lose your job and also have a $3,600 monthly payment to worry about. So, in the end, it’s a matter of your personal preferences. Can you afford to spend more interest rate for a longer loan tenure? Then, maybe you should go for a long-term loan. Do you prefer to wrap everything up as soon as possible? Then a short-term loan can be an option to consider.

Why Even Go for Personal Loans?

In one word? Flexibility. Personal loans are the best option available if you are in need of quick cash for medium to long-term financial goals and you want to avoid the high-interest rates associated with payday credits. Personal loans, at least in Singapore, are associated with less interest rates than credit cards, and can be utilized for everything, from paying off existing medical debt to purchasing new vehicles, going on holiday or even making stock investments. There are no questions asked, and no catch. Once the money is disbursed into your account, you can do with it as you please.

Moreover, personal credits, at least when provided by licensed moneylenders like us, have fixed monthly repayments, a flexible loan tenure and the total sum you will have to pay plus interest will be openly disclosed in the contract you sign. There are no variable monthly payments with a personal loan, or ambiguity that could make it harder to plan your long-term budget. With a personal loan, you know for sure how much you need to pay back per month, and what the total costs of the credit will be.

Not least, when provided by private lenders, personal loans are straightforward financial instruments that are usually characterized by fast approval times and lenient eligibility criteria. Do you need quick cash with increased urgency? Are you in a bit of a financial slump and do you need a cash infusion in a maximum of two to three days? Then, there isn’t a real better solution than going for a personal loan. These financial instruments are routine in Singapore, are a solution preferred by the vast majority of our country’s population, and our professional team is always available to help you select one that will align with your goals.

How Important Is the Stability of Your Income?

In short, it’s probably the most important criteria when determining your eligibility for a credit package. Per the regulations of the Moneylenders Act of 2008, in order to qualify for a personal, unsecured loan, your yearly income as a SG national should be at least $10,000, or half the median part-time yearly wage currently encountered in our country. Do you earn less than this? Technically, there is no limit on how low your income can be before you become ineligible to a maximum loan of $3,000. But in reality, the vast majority of lenders will require you to earn at least $20,000 per year, which will make you eligible to borrow up to six times your monthly wage.

However, how much you earn is just one part of the story. Besides this aspect, our team will also focus on the overall stability of your income. Maybe your wage in the last five months was above $10,000 per month. However, it will not really matter if your income was not regular, and you changed your employment at least a couple of times in the last year. A lower yearly salary and no stable income, will automatically increase your risk factor as a borrower, which will either mean that your application gets rejected, or the repayment terms of the contract will be stricter.

Are there ways around this? Sure, our team is always willing to analyze your case and find a solution that works for both parties. One option, for example, is to provide collaterals for the loan you contract, or have someone sign as a codebtor for the credit package you’re interested in. Moreover, if your income is not stable, or below a certain monetary threshold, our team will probably require more ample documentation before approving your credit package.

What Loans Are Provided by Licensed Lenders in Singapore?

  • Besides personal loans, private lenders active in our country can offer a multitude of credit packages designed either for specific purposes or as short-term cash influxes designed to be paid back by the end of the month. Payday loans for example, are characterized by interest rates significantly higher than personal loans (still under the 4% cap), and are typically expected to be paid back, in one payment, within thirty days. The sums involved in payday loans are typically under $2000-3000. But, these credits should be used with caution, as the interest rates can spiral if you go for multiple such loans at once.

On top of payday loans, other financial packages offered by our firm are DCLs. Debt consolidation loans are, in a way, a subset of personal loans, but their scope is more limited, as they can only be utilized to pay off existing debt and merge your existing financial obligations into a singular payment. The benefits of DCLs are multiple. 1) The interest rate of the DCL can, in many cases, be lower than the accumulated APR of more than one credit. 2) DCLs are easier to manage than multiple loans and their monthly payments are usually significantly more advantageous.

Not least, private lenders can also provide educational, renovation or medical loans. The eligibility criteria for these financial aid packages will vary from one place to another, but generally speaking, you should be at least 21 years of age, boast a credit score above 1840, and be a full-time employee. Are you self-employed? Then, you are still eligible for a loan, but our staff will need your latest NOA and maybe detailed records of your past banking data.

What Protections Do Borrowers Have?

Singapore is one of the safest countries in Asia when it comes to the overall financial protection applicable to borrowers. Per the regulations laid out in the Moneylenders Act of 2008, the maximum interest rate applicable to credit packages in our country is capped at 4% per month, and lenders are not permitted to impose an administration fee for the commercialized credit packages that surpasses 10% of the loan principal. On top of that, the maximum late payment fee is limited to $60 per month, regardless of the loan amount, and borrowers can leave their contracts, with no financial penalties, for up to a week after they sign them.

Plus, the income threshold imposed by the MLAW makes it so you can’t exactly borrow more than you can afford. Do you earn less than $20,000 per year? Then, you are limited to only $3,000, unless you are willing to provide collateral. Likewise, your application will get approved only if your BTI ratio is lower than twelve months of your monthly wage. Overall, the SG law is stricter with private lenders than it is in neighbouring countries. The process of becoming a licensed private lender in SG is complex, and the financial penalties for breaking contract agreements are particularly harsh. So, you can rest assured that our services are designed to facilitate your financial goals.
