Balancing Lifestyle and Finances: How to Manage the High Cost of Living in Singapore

22 December 2025 | Monetium Credit

Singapore is truly an enigma at times. One of the wealthiest countries in the world, with a GDP of no less than $574 billion, and yet a country in which more and more citizens are finding it hard to pay up their monthly loan obligations or gather the necessary funds for daily expenses. When we look at the metrics, Singapore looks truly excellent. A GPD per capita that exceeds $80,000, a life expectancy for the average citizen that surpasses 83 years, a crime rate that puts us in the top five safest countries in the world, and, of course, a public transit system that many consider to be the most performant in all of Asia.

Singapore is not a third-world country. It’s a global hub of innovation that, according to the World Economic Forum, ranks in the global top five for innovation, infrastructure and business competitiveness. However, unfortunately, Singapore is also a place in which 60% of the population lives paycheck to paycheck. It’s baffling at times how in such a rich country, so many people are one small external event away from facing economic hardships uncharacteristic of a developed state. However, this is the consequence of a fast-rising economy in which the living costs have long surpassed the financial possibilities of the average family.

When Are Loans an Option to Consider?

Singapore is a rich and well-developed country. But it’s also absurdly expensive at times, which is why many citizens, in the last couple of years, were forced to utilize external financial help in order to keep up with monthly expenses. How to save money in Singapore? Well, before you start creating a plan to manage living expenses, you will need to have some funds in the first place. The high cost of living in Singapore is a burden for many of us and makes the perspective of short-term loans quite appealing.

Are you currently faced with an emergency expense that drained a significant portion of your savings? Were you presented with a limited investment opportunity or are you simply trying to reduce your ongoing debt obligations and merge your monthly payments into a singular one? If so, applying for a personal loan or a DCL might be something you should consider. Short-term financial packages are a solution if you are dealing with cash flow issues, or if you want to borrow more money in the near future and are looking at ways to improve your existing credit score.

Of course, they are not for everyone. Are you looking for money-saving advice that doesn’t include external loans? In that case, the best advice we can give you is to follow the 50/30/20 rule, track your ongoing expenses, save up your existing money in separate savings accounts, and, of course, try to reduce food and dining costs as much as possible. But let’s be real, in most cases, reducing ongoing expenses is not a viable proposition. Do you need more cash, and do you need it now? Well, whether you are looking for an advantageous debt consolidation loan or a lifestyle credit package, we will help you out.

How Much Can You Borrow in Singapore?

The high cost of living in Singapore is not directly observable when peaking at the minimum income thresholds imposed by the Ministry of Law. In order to be eligible for an unsecured loan provided either by a bank or a Singaporean private lender, you will need to have an annual income of at least S$20,000 per year. Yes, technically, there is no legal limit, as even individuals with an income lower than S$10,000 are allowed to borrow up to S$3,000. But in reality, this is more of a technicality, and pretty much all lenders in our country will require you to possess an annual wage of at least S$20,000 before approving you for a personal loan.

This, however, shouldn’t be a problem. The average monthly income for full-time work in Singapore has now exceeded S$5,500. So, a person who earns this much should, at least in theory, be permitted to borrow up to S$33,000 with a single unsecured loan package. Do you want to borrow more than this? In such a case, you will need to guarantee your application with collateral. These collaterals can come in many forms and range from land bonds to ownership certificates or even artwork. Are you a foreigner? If so, contrary to popular belief, you too are permitted to utilize the financial services provided by our lending agency. That said, in your case, the applicable income thresholds will be slightly different.

What Are the Eligibility Criteria for Our Loan Packages?

It will depend on what type of loan you’re applying for. That said, as a general rule, you will be required to be at least 21 years old, be a citizen, PR, or foreigner with a valid work visa, and present proof of both your ongoing income and your residency. As for the documentation, our team will need a front and back copy of your NRIC, copies of your latest payslips or CPF contribution statement, and, of course, a document that attests to your residence status.

Did the high cost of living in Singapore impacted the viability of your venture’s services and therefore, were you forced to apply for a business loan? If so, we will need your venture’s ACRA documentation, your latest IRAS Notice of Assessment, recent profit and loss statements, and, not least, a business plan that expands on the feasibility of your marketing strategy.

Obtaining a loan in Singapore is quite straightforward, and once your application is approved, your rights as borrowers will be guaranteed by the government. Per the framework laid out in the Moneylenders Act of 2008, the maximum interest rate applicable to our lending services is capped at 4%. Plus, we cannot charge an administration fee for our packages that’s more than 10% of the loan principal. Our hands are tied, and therefore, you can be sure that you’ll obtain a good deal.
