In this day and age, the long-term development of Singapore-based companies is no longer strictly intertwined with the quality of the products or services being commercialised. To develop as an SME, you will need cash reserves that can fund the expansion of your organisation, and to do so, oftentimes, you will be required to consider business loans in Singapore.
But what exactly should you choose and why? In this post, we will go over the main eligibility requirements for small business loans in our country, we will tell you what you should be looking for, and we will present the principal reasons why we think Monetium can become a core pillar of your company’s development.
Moreover, if you have more questions you prefer to be answered in private, you can find us at 10 Jalan Besar, Sim Lim Tower. Well, eligibility depends on the lender, but typically, business loans in Singapore are available both to already established companies, in search of new avenues for business expansion, and for small organisations that are looking for extra cash, for the continuation of business activities.
Our firm, for example, is open to working with organisations from a wide selection of industries, and we evaluate a venture’s creditworthiness not by the domain in which they are active, but rather by analysing financial records and assessing the overall stability of the business operations.

Around 82% of small businesses fail due to cash flow issues. You might think your company’s immune to external disruption and you might even think that your current financial stability gives you the positive perspectives necessary to consider the expansion of your organisation into new markets.
You might even be right in your assessment. But cash flow issues are typically caused by modifications in customer demand, or by external events with a direct impact on profitability. So, things that are pretty much impossible to accurately predict. SMEs typically rely on the infusion of corporate loans because these emergency funds can be used to cover fluctuations in profitability and mitigate the costs of business interruptions.
Businesses in Singapore have access to a wide range of financial aid packages to choose from. However, not all of them work the same, and some are more suitable for specific financial requirements than others. Different financial aid structures are designed to help companies cover their operational costs and expansion plans at different stages of their development.
That said, in order to fully take advantage of the business loans we provide in Singapore, you will need to understand the small but surprisingly important differences between the commercialised business-focused aid packages discoverable in our country.
Also known as SME loans, since they are primarily preferred by small-to-medium-sized companies, these types of financial packages are designed to provide capital to organisations that require a fixed and limited cash infusion, which usually needs to be repaid faster than it would be the case with other types of business-focused loans.
Small business loans can be utilised for seizing expansion opportunities that are time-limited, purchasing inventory, investing in staff training or hiring marketing experts. The application process for these types of loans is simpler than that for long-term corporate loans designed for large enterprises, and depending on your company’s revenue and corporate credit report, the borrowing limits applicable to the contracted credit can be flexible.
These types of financial aid packages are designed to support the day-to-day operational requirements of domestic companies. While small business loans can be utilised for many purposes, such as purchasing equipment or hiring new workers, working capital loans are more limited in scope, and are meant to cover short-term critical expenses, such as rent, inventory or salaries. They are not a long-term financial solution, but they can be especially useful for unexpected financial downturns that require external help to properly address.
This type of loan structure is quite self-explanatory. Our professional lending agency can provide you with a credit package that you can utilise for the purchase of machinery or equipment required for the continuation of your business activities. The amount you can borrow will be dependent on the value of the purchases you intend to make. Likewise, if the sums involved are beyond the acceptable risk threshold for your company, the equipment itself can be leveraged as collateral.
This type of financing makes use of the company’s outstanding invoices, and can be a solution to consider, for example, if you are a firm with a large number of customers who have not yet paid for the services you provided. In simple terms, instead of waiting for customers to pay, businesses can send invoices to lenders, who then provide money upfront for them. Typically, lenders pay between 70% to 90% for these invoices and when the customer finally pays for them, they send the remaining sums back to the businesses, minus a collected fee.
Government-Assisted SME Loans
These types of financial programs are supported by the Singaporean government and are backed by Enterprise Singapore. Under EFS, SG-based start-ups can receive up to $500,000 over five years with no collateral required. But, in order to qualify, your business must be ACRA-registered, operate in our country for at least six months, be 30% owned by a PR of our country or by a citizen, and have at least one employee, plus more than 50% of the venture’s equity held by individuals.
Loan Type | Best For | Typical Loan Amount | Approval Speed | Notes |
Small Business Loans | SMEs needing flexible funding for expansion, inventory, or marketing | Varies widely, often moderate | Faster than long-term corporate loans | Flexible borrowing limits based on revenue and credit report |
Working Capital Loans | Covering short-term operational expenses like rent, salaries, and inventory | Small to moderate | Fast | Not a long-term solution; useful for unexpected financial downs |
Equipment Financing | Purchasing machinery or equipment | Based on equipment value | Moderate from banks, fast from private lenders | Equipment can be used as collateral |
Invoice Financing | Businesses with outstanding invoices needing upfront cash | 70%-90% of invoice value | Relatively fast | Lenders pay upfront and collect fees upon customer payment |
Government-Assisted SME Loans | SG-based startups meeting eligibility criteria | Up to $100,000 over five years, for business first loans | Moderate | No collateral required; must meet specific eligibility criteria |
Interest rate is the compensation received by our company for providing you with the funds necessary for the continuation of your business activities. How much you will have to pay will depend on the characteristics of your organisation, your risk score as a borrower, and the documentation you are able to provide. However, no matter what, the maximum interest rate applicable by law for credit packages is not allowed to surpass the limitations laid out in the Moneylenders Act.
It depends on the loan structure and whether you are using the services of a private lender or a conventional bank. There are two primary ways to calculate a business loan interest rate. Either it’s applied on the remaining loan balance, which gets reduced after each payment, or it is a flat rate that remains stagnant for the duration of the loan, regardless of the remaining balance. Banks typically offer business loans with an annual APR, while private lenders typically advertise rates on a monthly basis.
There is also a difference between the effective interest rate and the nominal one. EIR reflects the total costs of the loan package, including processing and administrative fees, while a nominal interest rate is the basic percentage charged by the lender/bank on the loan amount. So, the EIR will always be higher than the nominal rate.
As for what business interest rate you can expect, for banks, it’s likely to find a business loan with a 5% to 10% annual interest, while for a private lending agency, you can expect to pay between 1% and 4% monthly.
It is a difference, yes. But with a private lender such as we are, it’s easier to apply for a business loan, as our lending requirements are a bit more lenient, the required documentation is simplified and the approval time for the loan applications is sped up. So, if you need fast money to support major milestones, the small business loans provided by our firm should be the way to go.
Each lender in Singapore sets its own set of eligibility criteria. However, in general, in order to qualify for a business loan in Singapore, your business needs to have been active in the domestic market for at least six months and be able to provide recent financial statements, plus a couple of months’ worth of bank invoices.
When you apply for the financial services provided by our agency, we will analyse your venture’s operational history and check the credit history of the company, or at least of the board of directors. The business must be registered with the Account and Corporate Regulatory Authority, operate in Singapore and be able to showcase positive tax records. Plus, at least 30% of the shares of the company should be owned by an SG citizen or PR.
There is no fixed consensus among lenders when it comes to all the documentation you are expected to provide. But as a general rule, most lending agencies will need to access your ACRA business profile, see your certificate of incorporation, see the NRIC of the venture’s directors, and also analyse your latest NOA, corporate tax statement, bank invoices, or even cash flow projections. The documentation required when applying for SME-designed business loans is more in-depth. However, the application process, when using a private lender, is still easier and less time-consuming than with conventional banks.
Business loan interest rates vary between lenders, the selected loan structure, and the businesses’ financial profile. The exact rate will depend on the company’s credit history, operational track record, and revenue forecasts.
The amount businesses can borrow depends on annual revenue, the credit report of the venture’s directors, and the repayment terms desired by the organisation. Some businesses might qualify for smaller working capital loans, while other companies might be eligible for SME loans with longer repayment periods.
Yes, but the lending criteria, in their case, might be stricter. Most lenders, including us, require a minimum operating history or positive revenue projections before collaborating with newly-established SMEs. That said, we are open to finding a solution that benefits both parties.
In order to qualify for the business loans provided by our firm, we will need access to your recent bank statements, ACRA business profile, certificate of incorporation, the NRIC of the business directors, or your latest notice of assessment. However, depending on the characteristics of your application, we might require supplementary paperwork.
